I’ve now been subscribed to the Beauty Heroes subscription box for six months so I figured I would do an overview of the boxes I’ve received thus far. I’ve tried to be completely open and honest about these products and my experiences with them. Everyone is different and has their own unique skincare and haircare needs, so I’m just one voice saying what I think. Enjoy!
May 2016— Mahalo Skin Care ($127 Value)
When I found out that May’s Beauty Heroes box was going to have a full-size of Mahalo's the Rare Indigo inside(!!!), I couldn't resist signing up. I had previously tried a sample of this balm and was really intrigued by it, so having a full-size in this box which retails for $110 is simply amazing! Filled with 29 beautiful active ingredients, it is an exotic, sensory overload, but in the best way possible. It is one of my favourite balms to use at night, however, it can technically be used both morning and evening. The intoxicating soothing floral scent makes falling asleep seems like a sacred ritual in itself. If you're worried that it's going to be too rich for blemish-prone skin —don't. Whilst it doesn't zap away blemishes, it definitely calms and soothes my skin. I'm obsessed. If you have sensitive, breakout prone, or inflamed skin, I highly recommend you give this balm a try. This month's sidekick was a travel size of Mahalo's the Petal Mask. It’s a lovely mask that errs more on the gentle side of things. Even though it is considered a beta-hydroxy treatment and does include some clay in the formula, it uses gentle skin exfoliants (like manuka honey, turmeric, and vitamin C) which won’t cause skin irritations and will work to calm redness instead of causing it. The strong scent isn't my favourite but I’ll put that aside for the hydrating glow that this mask leaves me with. Oh how I wish there were two full sized products in this box because this mask pairs remarkably with the Rare Indigo Balm. I will definitely be purchasing the full size once I make my way through some of my masks!
June 2016— Modern Minerals Makeup ($96 Value)
I have to admit that I was a little disappointed when I first opened June's box. I pulled out the 2 lip glosses, the highlighter and the eyeshadow from my much-anticipated box and wondered just how often I was going to actually use these. But that was only how I felt before I tried everything on. Let's start with the glosses! The Emotive Lotus Wei Infused Lip Gloss in Padparadscha is a beautiful coral shade that provides the slightest wash of colour, and is ideal for layering over a lipstick or lip pencil, or wearing alone to add a just-bitten flush to your lips. I have a feeling that I am going to be repurchasing this one. The Invigorating Lip Gloss in Citrine is the perfect peachy sheer nude with a subtle gold sparkle that imparts some serious shine on your pout. Great on it’s own or placed in the centre of your lips for an added appearance of fullness. I really love the scent, which is minty and reminiscent of a mojito. Also, worth a mention for those with a fear of lip gloss- these are not sticky at all, they glide on to the lips beautifully and don’t leave you feeling like you’ve applied glue to your lips which is always a plus. The Modern Moonstone Cream Highlighter (which was exclusively launched to Beauty Heroes members) is an absolutely stunning rose gold highlighter. It is definitely my favourite of the bunch, and has pretty much replaced my otherwise go-to RMS highlighter. The formula is so silky, spreads over the skin like butter, and leaves a gorgeous gleam – not too subtle, not too obnoxious. One caveat, I really dislike the packaging. It feels cheap and looks unattractive – but what’s inside is worth it. Though the Flower Infused Eye Shadow in Rose Quartz gets a little less love simply because I’m not a fan of eye makeup in general, everything else in the box has been getting a lot of use. Overall, I am very happy to have had the chance to discover this brand.
July 2016— Kari Gran ($83 Value)
July’s box featured “The Little Black Dress” of eco skincare, Kari Gran. At the time of this box, Kari had just released an exceptionally cleanly formulated face sunscreen (the first edition to her minimal skincare line in four years), which was this month’s Hero product. The Kari Gran Three Sixty Five SPF 28 is a physical, broad-spectrum, facial sunscreen to be used 365 days of the year - rain or shine. Hence its name. It is completely waterless, and uses non-micro zinc with antioxidants and hydrating oils making it a completely elegant sunscreen that behaves more like a serum than an SPF. Less than a pump covers my entire face, and if I’m lazy it gets mixed right into my moisturizer. I love how well it blends into the skin, applying slightly white and then absorbing swiftly and completely. To avoid sounding like a broken record, you can read my full review of this beautiful sunscreen here. The (generous) sidekick was a trio of the other three products in the Kari Gran line; the cleansing oil, hydrating tonic, and essential serum. I loved the tonic, the other two products were ok, but I probably wouldn’t repurchase again simply because I have other favourite cleansing oil and serums.
August 2016— Laurel Whole Plant Organics ($102 Value)
This month was yet another brand that I've had my eye on; Laurel Whole Plant Organics. I’ve heard so many wonderful things about their products and they didn't disappoint. Not at all. The hero product this month was the Sun Damage Repair Serum. This serum packs a serious punch towards fading hyper-pigmentation and freckles. You can use it as a moisturizer, treatment serum, mild sun protectant or even use a drop to target specific hyperpigmenation spots. One of my main concerns is pigmentation and with continued use the pigmentation has definitely lightened. I also didn't get as many freckles this summer as I have in years past. Overall, big thumbs up for Laurel’s Sun Damage Repair Serum!
On to the sidekicks. The Honey Berry Enzyme Mask was amazing - I made my way through it in under two weeks! It hydrates and soothes the skin while simultaneously exfoliating and speeding cell turnover, and it’s antibacterial to boot. It made my skin feel so smooth and detoxified. The glow is crazy! I love the scent of it as well - it straight up smells like honey and berries. Like the Mahalo Petal mask, I will definitely be purchasing the full size once I make my way through some of my masks! What can i say? I am a sucker for a good honey mask. I also really enjoyed using the Before & After Sun Body Oil. It evokes scents of cedar and its base is the ever-effective and skin softening avocado oil. I would slather this on right after a shower and let it work its wonders. It absorbs nicely, and a very small amount goes a long way.
September 2016— UMA Oils ($100 Value)
UMA is yet another brand I have being dying to try out and when I saw that they were featured in September’s box I was over the moon. I am absolutely fascinated by the fact that their products are grown, crafted and bottled all in the same place. The hero product this month was UMA’s Intensely Nourishing Hair Oil. A rich, fragrant, and restorative hair oil that boasts an impressive ingredients list with lots of organic and native rare botanicals. The oil is light in weight yet very hydrating…but not in a my hair looks like a greasy mess kinda way. Not in the least. I only need 1-2 drops on dry hair to add shine, fight frizz and add softness. You can also use this as a treatment oil on your scalp – apply 5-6 drops to your roots, scalp and hair pre-shampoo or overnight. As a surprising twist, my fiancé loves using this as a beard oil, especially because the scent has such a unique earthy, woodsy, sweet vibe to it. To me $70 for 1oz is quite reasonable when you think about how little product is needed to have a high impact and the dual uses (and now I can get rid of all my fiancés *not so clean* beard oils taking up precious bathroom shelf space).
As for this month's sidekick – it deserved it’s own moment in the spotlight! The Ultimate Brightening Face Mask (launched exclusively to Beauty Heroes) is shockingly active with a lovely blend of bentonite clay, papaya, tomato, aloe vera, honey and rose water livened up by cinnamon, saffron & sandalwood for an intense warming mask treatment that leaves skin glowing! Different from any mask I’ve ever tried, I love the unique scent, ingredients, and results. Are you seeing a pattern here? I pretty much love every face mask I’ve tried from Beauty Heroes – they are just top-of-the-line.
October 2016— Bottega Organica ($157 Value)
To say I was excited to see Bottega Organica's Illuminate Eye Cream featured in this month's would be an understatement! I've heard such high praises about this magical eye cream, and let me tell you, it’s well worth the hype. Yes, it is expensive — very expensive — but much of the reason for that is the unusually labour-intensive process their team goes through to make each batch. All of Bottega Organica's ingredients are harvested and processed naturally on their very own farms located in Italy and Upstate NY – talk about farm to bottle! The Illuminate Eye Cream sources some major powerhouse ingredients you won't likely find elsewhere - horse chestnut to add radiance and tighten the skin around the contour, Arnica and Cornflower to stimulate renewal, and most notably Prawn Sage for its powerful ability to almost turn back the clock. Apart from amazing ingredients what I love is the texture of this cream, in the pot it looks so deceiving but its extremely light weight and not oily at all! I can almost feel my under eyes receiving nourishment as it sinks in. The only downside to this product is the 2 month shelf life, which makes me worry that I won't finish before it expires. That’s why I gifted some to my mom, who’s now using (and loving!) it too. You really only need a tiny amount and it would be such a shame if it would go to waste. I’ve also been storing it in the fridge to prolong it's shelf life.
This month's sidekick was Bottega Organica's Lemon Cleansing Face Oil. It was super effective at removing makeup as a first cleanse, however, I am not the biggest fan of lemon-y citrus scents. The first ingredient is lemon peel oil, so the scent is quite intense. I would rather something more earthy, so this is probably not something I would purchase myself, but it was nice to use.
Overall, Beauty Heroes never disappoints! I love being a subscriber and getting to try products at an affordable price. In months where I haven't needed the product or knew someone would enjoy it more, I love gifting products to other green beauties! Subscribing to Beauty Heroes is still one of my favourite green beauty decisions. If you want the best of green beauty then I highly suggest you jump on this train.
