Cleaning your makeup brushes is one of those mundane tasks that we must all carry out (unless of course you like to spread bacteria across your face). You’d be surprised at how many people I come across who have used the same foundation brush for months or years and NEVER washed it. In case you need reminding why, regular cleaning extends the life of your tools and when they're clean then your makeup performs much better. Not only that but keeping on top of it prevents bacteria being passed back and forth between your face and your brushes, helping minimize breakouts.
For the past year or so, I have been using foaming castile soaps to wash my brushes, but I recently came across the Benjabelle Cleansing Balm while randomly shopping on Amazon. I thought I would give it a try because I absolutely dread washing my brushes (don't we all?) and when I find a product that promises to make it an easier/quicker task, I’ll try it for sure. Let me start by saying this shampoo is amazingly effective. Nothing has made my brushes cleaner and nicer than the Benjabelle Cleansing Balm. It also makes me super happy that this balm is made with 100% natural and organic ingredients. I mean, its nice to know that you're not cleaning your brushes with chemicals that will eventually end up on your face. Here are the ingredients: Saponified Organic Oils of Palm, Coconut, Olive and Palm Kernel, Cocoa Butter, Powdered Oatmeal, Aloe Vera and Rosemary Extract. At first glance (and smell!) it reminded me of the oatmeal soaps that you can find at your local drugstore. The scent isn't overpowering... I really like it! It cleanses and conditions brushes and BeautyBlender sponges perfectly. I just wet my brush, swirl it into the soap to remove all the makeup, swish it around in my palm to lather and rinse. THAT’S IT. Both my natural and synthetic bristle brushes are left clean and soft. Dare I say it, they feel like new!
On top of the wonderfulness of the product itself, this is a fantastic small business, which is cruelty-free and environmentally aware. The packaging was genius---not excessive, but very protective. You can't lose. You can purchase it directly from their website for $14.95 USD (+$9.95 shipping to Canada). Instead I purchased mine on Amazon.ca for $19.95 CAD. One tin of balm lasts me a good 3 months and my brushes have never looked better.
